Welcome!
The purpose of this site is to be a resource for secondary teachers. Entering teachers can use this site as a resource to learn about literacy, and by understanding that literacy is more about the decoding and interpreting process than simply reading traditional written words, teachers can consider how to effectively implement strategies that support various types of literacy in the classroom.
All teachers are welcome to use any resources included on this site to implement in the classroom! We identify what "literacy" looks like in various specific fields, and teachers can use these examples to capture students' interest by exposing them to the wide world of literacy, and matching classroom activities to students' personal interests. Check out the Content Area Literacy page for these examples!
The language section can help teachers better understand how to validate their students' home dialects and languages in the classroom, as well as better evaluate where to focus their teaching in terms of vocabulary acquisition and differentiating language instruction for students from different backgrounds. Seeing how language transforms over time helps we teachers understand that all languages are important and valuable, and knowing these types of differences between languages helps us become more empathetic to those who come from different language backgrounds.
